Surgical procedures for flat feet vary depending on the root cause of the condition. Surgical correction to control pronation may include bone implants or Achilles tendon lengthening. Tendon transfer, which is a procedure to re-attach a tendon to another area of bone, may also be used to reduce pronation and improve foot function. The biomechanics of the leg involves a complicated chain of events. Once your foot hits the ground, the position, strength and flexibility of the foot will influence how forces are passed up the leg. In the same vein, the strength and flexibility of the hip will impact how and where those forces are absorbed.

Foam Rolling for Gastrocnemius/Soleus (Calf Muscles) and musculotendinous junction (where calf muscle becomes achilles tendon). This is a great way to release tension in the calves which can be pulling excessively on the Achilles and tissue of the foot. Many times problems arise in the musculotendinous junction, which is typically 3-5″ above the heel. Have the athlete cross one leg over the other, and push up and down with arms while pressing down on their calves. Be sure to rotate the toes in and out to get the entire width/length of the muscles.
Both an osteopath or a chiropractor should be able to take a look at the structural alignment, or rather misalignment and offer treatment and exercises to recalibrate the back, or hips, or legs, or whatever the cause is found to be. I’ve personally met someone with flat feet who gave themselves an arch. As he described it, he did exercises that lengthened his peroneus longus muscle and toned or tightened his tibialis anterior muscle. Admittedly, he had to exercise every day, and if he didn’t (or even if he stayed on his feet for more than 8 hours) his pronation would return.
